Cricket mostly about batting ?

I had a chance, while at the barber’s shop, to watch the test match going on between India and England. India had lost some 8 wickets then and Zaheer Khan juusst got dismissed. ‘Ah, he doesn’t know to bat. He just wastes deliveries.. ‘  were the kind of comments floating around.. Is this justified ?? This led to a chain of thoughts..

Is the comment justified ? – I thought.. It felt to me if Cricket was totally batsmen centric ? Is cricket all about batting ? Batsmen don’t need to give a damn about bowling. When the regular bowlers get hit badly, do we ever shout ‘Why doesn’t xxx (a great batsmen) take the ball ?”. But see, the bowlers – They have to be able to decently bat and when all of the top order batsmen are gone, they are expected to bat well and save the game! No matter how exceptional bowler he may be he’s still a target of our criticism if he doesn’t..

Thinking more – It may not be all that bad! Bowlers kinda get an opportunity to correct their mistakes which means they don’t get OUT! But see the batsmen – they’re screwed if they lose concentration for a split second! Well, now it makes sense about why things are the way they are now..

Now, here’s something interesting. How about have a game in which the roles are reversed. Batsmen get to play for an over each, and Bowlers keep bowling till they get out (??) and .. ? .. ? Looking forward to your ideas..

Simple. Give the batsman team a target that is equal to their career averages (subject to the batsman having played minimum 25 test innings) and ask the bowlers to go and take the each wicket as per their balls per wicket average. Means, the batsman team gets only as many balls as the bowlers can bowl as per their per wicket average.

How is it?

maybe the game itself is that way. by design.
look from another side. however well a bowler bowls, the good batsman can hit a good shot..
why do you see as if the bowlers are in a different team than their batsmen.
their roles are not equal. true. but required, only because the other team has to bat..

in short, the game is about batting.

Cricket used to be a contest between batsman and bowler. I can recollect some famous exchanges, like the one between Warne and Tendulkar, Allan Donald and Mike Atherton among the others. But like everything these days has a short-shelf life, even cricket seems to be going that way… 3 hours 1 match. All you get to see is, Bam, bam bam bam bam…

B.o.r.i.n.g :(
